Creeping phlox are an early blooming spring flower. This ground hugging herbal flowering plant is perennial (comes back each year) and native to the wooded areas of the Allegheny mountains. These variable colored flowers come in multiple shades of white, purple or pink. Though the flowers are pretty small, they are many and create quite a beautiful display in lawns and gardens.
Creeping phlox are very resilient plants and once rooted can withstand excessive trimming throughout the growing season. They can thrive best in an area that is shady, and thus make an excellent ground cover around the base of trees and shrubs. One plus to these quick growing plants is the more they are cut back, it seems the more they spread out. Creeping phlox often are seen hanging from rock walls and spread around the base of larger plants in order to naturally help control weeds from growing in and around floral gardens.
Tulips are another very well known spring flower which blooms pretty early. Just as the Daffodil flower bulbs hide in their protective bulbs throughout the winter, Tulips are a bulb type flower as well. These spring flowers belong to the flower family Liliaceae. Amazingly Tulip flowers' native range extends a vast region from northern Africa to northwestern China. Tulips are grown in gardens, cultivated in pots and are often sold commercially as cut flower bouquets.
Tulips are a perennial and come back year after year, their green foliage can be seen coming through the ground in early spring and late winter. These wonderful spring blooming flowers come in a variety of brilliant colors. They can grow very short and small or there is also a long stemmed variety of Tulips. The blossoms from the Tulip are typically shaped like a cup with a wax exterior coating. Tulips have few leaves compared to other types of flowers and do not emit a noticeable pungent fragrance as many other flowers.
Tulips require a significant period of cold and winter dormancy in order to thrive. So they grow best in hilly and mountainous areas which have lengthy cooler spring seasons and earlier summers to accommodate lengthy winters. If Tulips are grown in hotter climates they often will need to be replanted. These beautiful spring flowers can be started from seeds and/or offsets. An offset is a type of clone, where a cutting from a mother plant is used to regenerate another plant. This cultivation method produces a plant with the exact same genetic characteristics as the mother plant. When growing Tulips from seed, this requires five to eight years of growth before they begin to flower. This is the primary reason professional growers utilize offsets in order to produce flowering plants in as little as 1 year. But it is also important to consider that growing Tulips from seed will often produce a greater variety and newer hybrids.
Some interesting facts about Tulips are, Tulips derive their name from Persian origin which conveys the meaning Turban. It is also a common fact that Holland is considered the Tulip center of the world. Many varieties of Tulips are grown and commercially cultivated in this region and shipped to many other countries. Perhaps this is why the Netherlands are has been deemed the world's commercial Tulip center.
Daffodils are some of the first spring flowers to show through the ground in late winter. These flowers are usually the first noticeable signs of spring flowers which come in late February or early March. You should look closely near the ground for green shoots pointing straight up. These shoots will often stick out from frost or snow covered ground and press their way through leaves, sticks and other ground cover. The early spring growth originates from a bulb that is protected several inches below the ground surface. Daffodil flower bulbs have been mistaken for wild onion bulbs and have historically been a cause for poisoning, since daffodils contain an alkaloid toxin. After a few weeks seeing green shoots from the bulb, the daffodil blossoms will begin to form.
Daffodils are a bright yellow color flower often seen in large groups throughout the countrysides and farms. Sometimes called an Easter lily, the daffodil flower is from the Narcissus species of spring flora. A common name that is really more accurate has been given to these early spring flowers which is Easter Bell, this originates from the German cultural region. Daffodils have a long trumpet shape center which is surrounded by six leaves often of the same yellow color, but this may vary some due to hybrid interbreeding of this flower.
There are many types of spring flowers which are coveted by flower enthusiasts in many countries. Springtime is a glorious season of the year which brings a fresh and welcome sight to beautiful flowers after a dull winter. It is important to take the time this spring to enjoy the colors of spring flowers and various scents in your region. If we will set aside a few moments each day throughout the spring season to stop and take in the beauty around us, the healthful benefits of the new life in springtime can rejuvenate your soul.

Is this appropriate for a late March wedding?
I am planning my wedding, and we are looking at the last Saturday in March. Would this be considered a spring wedding? Would short bridesmaids dresses be appropriate? The ceremony will be indoors as will the reception. I am thinking of using a spring mix for the bouquets. Will that be appropriate for that time of year?
I live in the Southern US, so usually the weather is warmer by the end of March. There have been some years when there was a random cold snap, but it isn't typical.
It could be considered a spring wedding or late winter wedding. Either would be OK. Yes it would be OK for the attendants to wear short dresses, I think the spring mix for the bouquets would be beautiful. The important thing to remember is it is your wedding and you can do what you want.
