Soy Basics

What are the basic essentials for a new vegans grocery list?
well im 15 and just became a vegan. i need to no the basics on what to buy. be specific on the brands please and diff flavors.
also, which is better to have, vanilla or plain soy milk??
There are no definite basics, just things that might make your cooking/eating easier and give more balanced nutrition.
- Extra firm tofu, Western-style - I like Sunrise Organic brand, and use it to make nuggets with shake&bake, or fried in stir-fries and curries - it contains lots of calcium
- Nutritional yeast - sprinkled on foods or in sauces, it gives a rich and cheesy flavour; many are also fortified with vitamin B-12
- Vegetarian broth cubes or cans of vegetarian mushroom gravy if you don't know how to make gravy from a bouillon cube; I use McCormick's All-Vegetable bouillon cubes in 'fake chicken' flavour
- Silken tofu - you can use it to add protein to smoothies, make sauces, or you can buy the tasty dessert kind to eat on its own
- Peanut or other nut butters, hummus, and vegan margarine for your sandwiches, toast, dipping veg, cooking, etcetera.
- Legumes like peas, beans, chickpeas, and lentils, to replace meats in stews or soups, pot pies, salads and sauces.
- Ground flax seed, silken tofu, or commercial egg replacer, for baking, to substitute eggs. I find flax works the best - I just buy it at the bulk store.
I started with Vanilla silk soy milk, and eventually switched to plain once I had forgotten what dairy milk tasted like. Make sure you buy fortified soy milk so you get your vitamins and minerals.
