Six Ways to Survive the College Dining Hall

The revolving menu of burgers, fries, and other fatty foods isn't good for your waistline, and it can get pretty boring, too. Instead of resigning yourself to gain ten pounds this year, just follow these simple steps to surviving the cafeteria.

1. Get to Know the Menu. Most schools work on a weekly or bi-weekly rotation. You can probably get the menu in your school inbox, too. Knowing what's coming can help you figure out how you're going to eat healthy in spite of it. Plus, if you have money in your budget to go out once in a while, you can plan nights out when the cafeteria food is at its worst.

2. Don't Starve Between Meals. Because we are poor college students, many of us will eat nothing but three square meals a day. Not snacking between meals simply means that you're going to completely pig out when you hit the cafeteria. So start spending a little money each week keeping healthy snacks in your dorm room. Eating every three or four hours will keep you from gorging yourself at mealtimes. Here are some healthy snack ideas:

* Low-Fat String Cheese

* Yogurt Cups

* Mini Bagels with Cream Cheese or Peanut Butter

* Fruit

* Veggies

* Mixed Nuts (In VERY small quantities!)

3. Start with a Salad. Even if you LOVE the cafeteria's burritos, don't start out there. Instead, load up your plate with a salad first. Once you've eaten it, go back for the "real" food. You'll still be able to enjoy the foods you like, but you won't enjoy quite so MUCH of them.

4. Remember: Your Stomach is the Size of Your Fist. That's right. Ball up your hand and look at it. That's how small your stomach is. You should really only be eating a handful of food at a time. Sometimes this is just not practical since you can only eat in the cafeteria two or three times a day, but, still, don't overdo it with an enormous plate of food.

5. Skip Dessert... Sometimes. Life is way too short to skip dessert all the time. However, wasting calories on crappy ice cream just because it comes out of a Dairy Queen style dispenser is just dumb. Instead of eating dessert all the time, hold out for those days when there's something on offer that you really, truly love. Then, enjoy a modest proportion very, very slowly.

6. Talk while You Eat. One of the joys of college life is getting to hang out with your friends pretty much all the time. Having a good conversation over a plate of food can be good if it means that you slow down while you're eating so that you notice when you're full. However, you may have to train yourself to not eat mindlessly while you're chatting about the last Chemistry exam, since that can make you eat until you're about to burst. Not a good thing!

About the Author

Why does Alpha Kappa Alpha have three graduate chapters in Washington DC?

I was wondering if anyone could explain the differences between Alpha Kappa Alphas three graduate chapters in DC. I was interested in finding out more about DC's graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha and supporting some of their programs and events but then I found out that they actually have three of them and I didn't understand why or how they differed, so I wasn't sure which one I should look into.

Initially Xi Omega was the first chapter in D.C and the area just expanded to three chapters. Rho Mu Omega being the last one in 1988, which is my chapter. Xi Zeta Omega is the other chapter. We work together on many projects and are not as separate as it seems. You can check out the websites and/or attend functions just to see which chapter fits you best. Each chapter all over the world is different, but we don't profess that one is better than the other. The D.C. area is a very big area and Sorors join the chapter that they are most comfortable with. Feel free to visit www.rhomuomega.org to check out my chapter in particular.
